TWiSTAR is a rally which first and foremost emphasizes riding. The rally organizers make every attempt to lay out the twistiest most interesting and fun riding route possible. The route is pre-ridden within weeks of the event and adjusted according to road conditions to try to minimize the possibility of encountering poor road conditions or closed roads. The entire ride is routed on public roads, and as such participants should assume that any and all dangers possible and associated with riding on public roads are present and should ride accordingly. The rally was first run in 1993.
Everyone ride at whatever pace they find comfortable and safe. Some riders ride at what can only be characterized as a "spirited" pace, while others ride at a pace aimed at "smelling the roses". Route sheets are provided to enable riders to ride whenever they choose and at whatever pace they choose. Due to differing riding paces, participants are encouraged to move to the right of their lane in the event other riders catch up to them on the route, to make it easier for other participants to execute a safe pass.
The rally route is typically between 300 and 350 miles. Gas stops are planned every 100 miles to enable participants on bikes or with physiques with limited range to participate comfortably.
While all riders are welcome to join this rally, we do not recommend new riders to participate. The route covers the twistiest most challenging roads we can find in the area, and just as it would be foolish for a driver with a new driver's license to go and drive challenging twisty roads, it is probably not the best idea for a new motorcycle rider to ride challenging twisty roads.
Refunds will be provided to any participant who pre-registers for the event and cancels more than a week prior to the event.
All event participants must register for the event and pay the event registration fee. The registration fee is set to recover event costs only without providing the event organizers or volunteers any compensation for making the event possible. Registration is required to ensure that the event organizers can are not unduly exposed for volunteering to put on the event and to enable the event organizers to support event attendees.
TWiSTAR is an AMA sanctioned rally under the MSTA's AMA club charter, and the MSTA provides the support and promotion for this rally for the benefit of its members. As such, MSTA membership is required to participate. To encourage new MSTA membership, members who join the MSTA in conjunction with this rally, get the rally registration and a year membership in the MSTA for the price of the rally registration.
When you register, let the people handling registration know that you are looking to find some other people to ride with. They will introduce you to the Member Assistance Partner (MAP) volunteer who will introduce you to other riders who might be good riding companions. If any participant wants, the MAP volunteer will also lead a group to accommodate riders with reservations about riding alone or being able to follow the route. We also encourage participants to be sociable and to talk with as many other participants as possible. The two organizers of this rally, Ray Kang (MSTA MN State co-director) and Larry Mayhew (MSTA WI State director) first started riding together when they met each other at this event in 1999.
There also groups of riders coming from other states who you may be able to hook up with to ride to the event, ride with at the event and ride back from the event. Join the MSTA Forum and join the discussion about this event.
